Asia Pacific Predator League 2020 Delayed to Next Year

Acer announced that the Asia Pacific Predator League (APAC) would not push through in July 2020 as it had been planned. Instead, the tournament finals have been rescheduled to 2021 due to the ongoing CoronaVirus Disease pandemic. This was amidst the health and safety concerns of the gaming community, which remains the company’s primary concern.

Nonetheless, the same teams qualified in the preliminary competitions will be attending the finale come spring 2021. The event name has also been changed to Predator League 2020/2021 whose winners will walk away with a totaled sum of approximately PHP 20million (or almost USD400,000)

Most Anticipated Event In The Philippines

The Asia Pacific Predator League Finals was undoubtedly the most anticipated LAN event in the Philippines. Since January 2018’s Galaxy Battles II, the country hasn’t hosted any arena-sized event. However, with the country being hit hard by the pandemic, the scheduled kickoff of the tournament, initially set for February 2020, has been postponed. Again, Acer carries out the difficult but essential decision to have the match put off.

Andrew Hou, President of Acer, backed up the postponement of the APAC Predator league as a sign of commitment to the community instead of having it canceled. Moreover, he added that the pull-off is for the best interest and safety of the competitors, spectators, fans, and staff alike.

As a testament to the many fans who had anticipated the tournament, Acer reports claim to have sold more than 20 000 tickets for the event that was to be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. But as a sign of appreciation, Predator has been offering limited-edition Predator League 2020 t-shirts, face masks and drawstring bags for VIP ticket holders, and a Predator shirt for regular-ticket buyers. Additional instructions on how to claim the rewards can be accessed in the Predator Gaming’s social media fan pages.

17 Regions, 1 Champ

Reports from Acer indicate that despite the postponements, the teams selected to participate in the final rounds would be invited. 16 PUBG teams and 12 Dota 2 teams from 17 regions have been chosen for the tournament. The event winners will likely get direct entries to defend their titles in the forthcoming Predator League.

Notable names such as Neon Esports, TNC Predator, Flower Gaming, Boom Esports, and Reality Rift will headline the competition in the Dota 2 category.  At the same time, the PUBG lineup features the likes of Miraculum Gaming and ArkAngel Predator.

These teams could take advantage of this additional time to train and polish up in readiness for their opponents. Similarly, less stable teams would take this as an opportunity to disband.

In 2018, the inaugural APAC Predator League took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, to reinforce the brand’s support to the region’s gaming industry. Subsequently, the second edition was held in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Nimibutr Stadium. The tournament was watched by more than 10 000 fans in real-time and garnered about 4.3 million views online.
